Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - With a sum of billions, Deutsche Bahn wants to renew ailing tracks in the southwest this year, replace switches and renovate bridges.

A rail spokeswoman for the German press agency said that all of the projects will be combined with around 2.07 billion euros.

It is a record sum - never before has so much money flowed into the railway infrastructure in the southwest in a year.

According to Bahn, the largest construction projects in 2021 include the electrification of the railway line between Ulm and Friedrichshafen (Südbahn), the modernization of the Schwarzbaldbahn, which runs from Offenburg through the Black Forest to Singen, and the work planned for summer on the main Stuttgart S-Bahn line.

Across all projects, Deutsche Bahn intends to renew 230 kilometers of tracks, 290 switches and eight bridges as well as 115 stops and stations in Baden-Württemberg in the current year.

Nationwide, the group plans to spend 12.7 billion euros on infrastructure - according to Deutsche Bahn, that is more money than ever before.

Rail Infrastructure Board Member Ronald Pofalla emphasized at the beginning of March that “a new network for Germany” was needed.

The many billions of euros come primarily from investment funds already agreed by the federal government, the federal states and the federal railway company.

According to its own information, the group contributes around 2.4 billion euros of the total from its own funds.

The rail network has a total length of 33,000 kilometers.

Little was done to maintain it for many years.

In the meantime, however, large sums are flowing into the modernization of the routes.
