At about 4:30 pm on the 16th, a tourist bus crashed into a mountain on Suhua Highway in Yilan County, Taiwan, causing 6 deaths and 39 injuries.

According to the bus driver at the scene, he found that he suddenly "cannot step on the brakes" while driving. It was suspected that the brakes failed and the vehicle stalled when turning downhill and hitting the mountain wall, causing a car accident.

The injured are currently being treated in many hospitals in Yilan

This tourist bus is responsible for transporting residents from Xindian District, New Taipei City to Hualien for a two-day and one-night tour. The bus includes 45 people including tourists, drivers, and tour leaders, mostly senior citizens.

The injured were sent to several hospitals in Yilan for treatment. According to information from the Yilan Fire Department, 9 people were seriously injured, 9 were moderately injured, and 21 were slightly injured.

There was a rollover accident on the nearby road 11 years ago

The accident site was 115 kilometers away from Suhua Highway.

It is understood that 11 years ago, in 2010, a major rollover accident occurred on the Su-Hua Highway in Taiwan. At that time, 26 people were killed. It was one of the most serious traffic accidents involving tourists from mainland China.

At that time, the accident site was only 6-7 kilometers away from the current location. The typhoon caused a landslide caused by continuous heavy rain, causing the vehicle to be hit and crashed into the sea.

Affected by the accident, the "Suhua Highway Improvement Plan" also passed the environmental impact assessment at an accelerated pace. Construction began in early 2011 and the entire line was opened to traffic early last year.

The section where the accident occurred was not included in the "Suhua Highway Improvement Plan" at the time. However, due to the high number of deaths in traffic accidents in recent years, it was included in the "Suhua Highway Safety Improvement Plan" last year. The upgrade is expected to be completed in 2030.

The car body was knocked out of a big hole and several passengers were bounced into the ravine

It is understood that at the time of the accident, the vehicle was suspected of failing its brakes and hit the mountain wall after a continuous turn.

At present, the specific cause of the accident is still under investigation.
