Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - The slump in business and the shedding of thousands of jobs in the Corona crisis have torn the Frankfurt airport operator Fraport deep in the red in 2020.

The bottom line was a loss of almost 658 million euros to the shareholders after a profit of around 421 million a year earlier, as the company listed in the MDax announced on Tuesday in Frankfurt.

CEO Stefan Schulte predicts red numbers for this year as well.

He expects fewer than 20 to 25 million passengers at Germany's largest airport, which is fewer than predicted in autumn.

In the pre-crisis year 2019, the airport operator still counted more than 70 million passengers.

Last year, the volume fell to 18.8 million passengers due to the pandemic and travel restrictions.

In view of the crisis, the shareholders - above all the state of Hesse and the city of Frankfurt - should not only receive a dividend for 2020, but also for 2021.
