Görlitz (dpa / sn) - A fire broke out in the basement of an apartment building in Görlitz on Monday evening.

About 40 people had to leave the house on Lausitzer Strasse, a police spokesman said.

A 93-year-old resident was taken to the hospital for preventive care.

Due to the heavy smoke development, emergency shelters were organized for the night.

After the extinguishing work, some residents returned to their homes at their own risk.

According to the police, all residents could move into their apartments on Tuesday.

The stairwells of three other house entrances were also damaged by the smoke development.
