Lichtenfels (dpa / lby) - A 55-year-old truck driver was seriously injured in a rear-end collision near Lichtenfels in Upper Franconia.

First of all, a 77-year-old driver on federal highway 173 noticed too late on Monday afternoon that an exit and the right-hand lane were blocked, the police said.

He drove into the left lane and overlooked a garbage truck behind him.

This rammed the car despite emergency braking.

Another truck crashed into the garbage truck. Its driver was trapped and his legs were severely injured.

According to the police, around 70 fire fighters, ten police officers, rescue services and an emergency doctor were then on duty.

The federal highway had to be closed for several hours.
