With a record result of 32.6 percent of the vote, the Greens led by Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann won the state elections in Baden-Württemberg.

According to the preliminary official final result, the CDU around top candidate Susanne Eisenmann followed in second place at the polls on Sunday with a historic low of 24.1 percent.

The Greens were able to surpass their previous peak value of 30.3 percent in 2016, while the CDU slipped again by almost three percentage points below its then low.

According to the preliminary results, the SPD won 11.0 percent of the vote after 12.7 percent in 2016. The FDP improved from 8.3 percent to 10.5 percent, while the AfD rose from 15.1 percent to 9.7 percent collapsed by around a third.

The left once again missed entry into the Stuttgart state parliament.

The Greens have 58 seats in the new state parliament, the CDU 42 seats.

The SPD has 19 seats, the FDP eight and the AfD 17 seats.

Kretschmann's previously ruling coalition with the CDU could thus continue its work, but a traffic light alliance with the SPD and FDP under green leadership would also be possible.

In projections, red-green also seemed to be an option in between - but according to the preliminary result, this is not possible after all.

After the elections, the Green Youth demanded that government alliances with the CDU be rejected.

"A strong signal was set against the CDU, which should be implemented," said the spokeswoman for the Green Youth, Anna Peters, the "Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland" (RND / Montag) according to a preliminary report.

The Greens and the SPD could achieve something important together.

The results of the elections meant “that the CDU was voted out of the game”.

Because when it comes to climate protection, the CDU, as the ruling party in Baden-Württemberg, has massively blocked.
