Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Rhineland-Palatinate SPD leader Roger Lewentz has spoken out in favor of thorough coalition negotiations.

"I wouldn't put any time limit on myself, except for what the constitution gave us, namely May 18," said Lewentz of the German Press Agency in Mainz.

On May 18, the state parliament is constituted and the state parliament president and the prime minister elected.

"And we'll manage that too," said Lewentz.

Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD) announced on Sunday evening that she wanted to continue the traffic light government.

"We were well advised, five years ago, that we should think through the entire legislative period, discuss and regulate the entire political spectrum with one another, not excluding anything," said Lewentz, referring to the negotiations between the SPD's first coalition with the FDP and the Greens in 2016.

"In the coalition agreement, all political fields have been dealt with," said Lewentz.

"And that makes working together for five years so easy that at the end of the day, until the last day of government before the election, you deal with each other in a collegial and friendly manner."

The sensational performance of the SPD in Rhineland-Palatinate could also benefit the federal party, which was 16 percent in the last polls, said Lewentz.

“Olaf Scholz is a good top candidate, and he also affects people.

And I would advise my party at the federal level to now take a fully offensive look at the federal elections. "

The SPD in the federal government could rely on the SPD in Rhineland-Palatinate and see that what is now “by far the only people's party” is “that we can penetrate these spheres”.
