Frankfurt (dpa) - For the Frankfurt SPD top candidate Mike Josef, the Awo affair with his party colleague, Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann, is one of the reasons for the Social Democrats' loss of votes in the local elections.
"The connection between the Awo scandal and the mayor has already cost us a few percentage points," he said on Monday.
It is important that clarification is now brought about.
The affair has been hanging over us like a sword of Damocles for a year and a half.
The Frankfurt public prosecutor's office is currently investigating Feldmann and his wife in the affair of company cars and excessive salaries at the Frankfurt Workers' Welfare Association (Awo).
After there had already been preliminary investigations, an investigation has been underway since the end of February because of the initial suspicion of taking advantage, the prosecution said last Friday.
In 2019 reports of an excessive salary for Feldmann's current wife as the head of a German-Turkish daycare center triggered the Awo scandal.
Since then, there have been investigations into further allegations on suspicion of fraud and infidelity against former leaders of the Frankfurt Awo.
Awo has been set up with a new board and presidium for more than a year.
Feldmann Frau has already repaid excessive salaries.
"There is still nothing to do with the suspicion," Feldmann emphasized last week.
The fact that there are now, two days before the local elections, media reports on the investigation, is "campaign skirmish".
According to the trend result, the SPD only achieved 16.6 percent in the city council election on Sunday, 7.2 percentage points less than in the final result of the 2016 local elections. However, not all ballot papers have been evaluated yet.
Josef, who is also the head of urban development, described the previous figures as "disappointing".
How things will proceed will be shown «when the end result is there».
