The new town hall in Kiruna, which was inaugurated in November 2018, had problems with leakage almost immediately - problems that are still not fully remedied.

City Hall is just the first of several large construction projects with flat roofs in the urban transformation in Kiruna.

Flat roofs are being built - despite a lot of problems

In the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's large survey of building damage, water that penetrates flat roofs is by far the most common damage - and the most expensive to repair.

Despite this knowledge, several large houses with flat roofs will be built in Kiruna's new center.

Leakage for three years

City Hall was the first building to be completed in the new city center.

The leak, which has been dragged along since the inauguration, is still a problem.

The two top floors of the county art museum, which is located in the middle of the town hall, are still closed.

It has also dripped into galleries and office spaces on the top floor.

LKAB and contractor want to wait

- You have to open, change the plate and see what's up there.

But the contractor wants that and LKAB wants to wait until we see that no more water comes in, says Gert Mörtvik, customer representative at Kiruna municipality.

According to him, it is not flat roofs per se that are the problem and that could be a cause for concern for future construction projects.
