Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Mateo Klimowicz from VfB Stuttgart is in the squad of German U21 footballers for the preliminary round of the European Championship.

National coach Stefan Kuntz nominated the Argentine-born offensive player for the first time, as the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Monday.

Due to the Bundesliga career of his father Diego Klimowicz, Mateo Klimowicz had spent some of the first years of his life in Germany and also started playing football here.

The Kuntz-Elf will face Hungary (March 24), the Netherlands (March 27) and Romania (March 30) at the tournament in Hungary and Slovenia.

The tournament was divided into two parts this year due to the corona pandemic.

The preliminary round will take place next week, the knockout phase will follow from May 31 to June 6.

The two best teams in each of the four groups of four qualify for the quarter-finals.
