Munich (dpa) - After the election of the Greens in Baden-Württemberg, the Union needs a “firewall” to the eco party, according to CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt.

It must be "frightening that after a catastrophic loss in the elections five years ago with a decline of 12 percent for the CDU has now gone down again significantly and many Union voters have switched to the Greens," he said on Monday, according to information of participants in a meeting of the CSU board.

This shows how far the Greens in Baden-Württemberg have already penetrated into the Union milieu, said Dobrindt.

"I therefore advise you to deal more closely with the Greens, to make differences clear, to put in firewalls."

Even if the poor performance of the CDU in the state elections on Sunday in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate does not come as a surprise, the results are no less shocking, Dobrindt was quoted further.

"The trend against the Union began well before the mask issue."

Like CSU leader Markus Söder, Dobrindt warned that a coalition against the Union would still be possible in the federal government after the federal election in September.

"The elections make it clear: It is not a matter of course that the Union is involved in the next federal government," he said.

In the state elections on Sunday, the Greens in Baden-Württemberg and the SPD in Rhineland-Palatinate clearly asserted themselves as the strongest force.

The CDU with its new party leader Armin Laschet, on the other hand, fared worse than ever.

In both countries, the SPD, FDP and the Greens could now forge traffic light alliances - and leave the CDU out as the second strongest force.
