Düsseldorf (AP) - The Kölner Haie were able to prevent the fourth derby defeat in the German ice hockey league at the Düsseldorfer EG.

In the 231st duel between the two Rhenish rivals, the team of ex-national coach Uwe Krupp won 6: 3 (3: 0, 1: 3, 2: 0) in Düsseldorf on Monday and was able to overtake DEG in the table of the northern relay.

The hosts had won the previous three derbies.

The Haie are now fifth in the table with 33 points in a catch-up game that has yet to be played, DEG (31) slipped to sixth after the sixth defeat in a row.

The four best clubs from the north and the south qualify for the playoffs.

Colin Ugbekile (1st minute), James Sheppard (3rd) and Jonathan Matsumoto (8th) gave the Haie a quick 3-0 lead in the first third.

Then DEG came back: Alexander Ehl (30th), Daniel Fischbuch (36th) and Patrick Buzas (40th) shortened to 3: 4 in a Cologne goal by Pascal Zerressen (32nd).

Frederik Tiffels (59th) and Landon Ferraro (60th) released the sharks with their goals in the final third.
