The FDP is feeling a tailwind in the super election year 2021.

After a long-term low in the polls in the previous year, the Free Democrats not only made the leap into the state parliaments of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, but can also have a say in the formation of governments in both federal states.

In Stuttgart, the liberal party made significant gains and achieved one of the best results in the past 50 years. In Mainz she consolidated her share of the vote despite the new competition from the Free Voters. The FDP had to let the Greens pass, but it can point out that participation in a traffic light government with the SPD and the Greens "was confirmed for the first time in our history."
