Shortly before the state elections in Baden-Württemberg, all signs point to a clear victory for the Greens and a severe setback for the CDU.

According to the latest polls, the Greens and Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann can count on a lead of seven to ten points over the Union.

The CDU with its top candidate Susanne Eisenmann therefore has to adjust to the worst result in the history of the country in its former stronghold.

The Christian Democrats hope that the Greens will continue the coalition with them.

But Kretschmann could also try a traffic light with the SPD and FDP.

Even a two-party alliance with the liberals is therefore within reach.

It would be a completely new “lime” coalition.

The SPD has ruled in no other western country for as long as in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The head of government, Malu Dreyer, who has been in office for eight years, is popular, even with CDU voters.

She can point to successes on the dominant topic of the election campaign, the pandemic.

The only traffic light government made up of the SPD, FDP and the Greens in Germany has ruled together for five years without any major problems and, according to the surveys, could mathematically continue even if the CDU were slightly ahead of the SPD.

Experts do not see a mood of change.
