Mainz / Stuttgart / Berlin (dpa) - The SPD leaders Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans see the results of the state elections in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate as a tailwind for the social democrats in the federal government.

"This is actually a tailor-made prelude to the super election year 2021," said Esken on Sunday evening in Berlin.

Especially the victory of Prime Minister Malu Dreyer in Rhineland-Palatinate is a good omen for the SPD in the federal government and for a possible chancellorship of Olaf Scholz.

The voters honored that Dreyer responded responsibly to the Corona crisis.

"The SPD showed today how to win elections," said Esken.

Walter-Borjans emphasized that a progressive government without the participation of the CDU would now be an option in both countries.

He is also pleased that the AfD could not benefit from the Corona crisis.
