Bad Ems / Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate started smoothly on Sunday.

After the polling stations opened at 8 a.m. in the morning, no special incidents were known, said Hans Ulrich Weidenfeller from the office of the regional returning officer of the German Press Agency in Bad Ems.

For the time being, no reliable statements could be made about voter turnout.

Around 3.1 million eligible voters in Rhineland-Palatinate were called to elect a new state parliament.

The calm start also contributed to the fact that many citizens had cast their votes by letter even before the polling stations opened.
