Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Free Voters in Rhineland-Palatinate have shown themselves to be delighted about the presumed first entry into the state parliament in Mainz.

“What we set out to do in the state parliament has been achieved.

A good horse just jumps, they say in equestrian sports, ”said top candidate Joachim Streit on Sunday in Mainz.

“The five percent was our goal, 5.5 is of course a little more.

Let's wait and see how the postal votes turn out and, above all, what the individual results from the regions are. "

Streit said he saw the election result as confirmation of the traffic light coalition.

“The government mandate was given to the old government by the electorate, that is clear.

For us that means we will sit on the opposition benches. "

They want to use the next five years to develop the Free Voters as a party.

"We are also expecting a lot of new entrants," said Streit.

The state chairman Stephan Wefelscheid spoke of "a great thing" if the prognoses about a move into the state parliament should be confirmed.

"That would of course be a great thing, a sensation for the Free Voters."
