Kiev's mayor and ex-boxing world champion Vitali Klitschko practiced defending against Russian tanks with his deputies on a firing range.

"I am convinced that we have to be well prepared to defend our city and its inhabitants and our state if necessary," said the 49-year-old head of the Ukrainian capital, according to a statement.

The city tour is responsible for the safety of the citizens.

The district mayors also took part in the shooting training with heavy machine guns.

They also practiced persevering in a hole in the ground under an approaching tank followed by a hand grenade throwing.

The exercise was standard in the Soviet Army.

Pictures also show Klitschko in a Soviet anti-aircraft gun SU-23, which can also be used for anti-tank defense.

According to Klitschko, the military exercises should take place regularly in the future.

Since the coup in Kiev, the Russian annexation of the Black Sea Peninsula of Crimea in 2014 and the subsequent support of separatists in Donbass by the Kremlin, Ukraine sees itself militarily threatened by its neighbors.

According to UN estimates, more than 13,000 people were killed in the seven-year conflict in eastern Ukraine.
