Mainz (dpa) - The Rhineland-Palatinate AfD leader Michael Frisch declared the losses of his party in the state elections, among other things, with "extremely favorable framework conditions" five years ago.

"We were at the height of the refugee crisis - that gave us an incredible number of voters at the time," he said on Sunday in Mainz.

"Now we had the corona pandemic, where we as an opposition party actually hardly appeared - even in the media."

That made it difficult for the AfD to get its messages across to the voters.

After counting over 90 percent of the electoral districts, the AfD was 8.6 percent on Sunday evening (minus 4 points).

In 2016, it had become the third strongest force in the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament with 12.6 percent and according to the projections it will remain so.
