Moscow (AP) - Russian security forces broke up an opposition gathering during a raid in the capital Moscow and arrested several people.

Numerous participants in the forum were being held in prisoner transporters, a reporter for the German press agency reported from the meeting place.

The opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Mursa and the activist Alexej Piwowarow had been taken away, among others.

Dozens of people, including journalists who wanted to cover the event, were temporarily detained in the building, a hotel.

It was initially unclear why the police broke the event.

The Russian opposition repeatedly complains about serious violations by the security authorities of the right to freedom of assembly.

In the past, attempts by dissidents to assemble and organize failed time and again.

Several prominent opposition figures were to appear at the forum of the so-called "United Democrats", including the Moscow local politician Ilya Yashin.

A new parliament will be elected in Russia this autumn.

In the election, the Kremlin United Russia party wants to defend its two-thirds majority.
