Munich (dpa / lby) - Good news for asparagus friends: Despite the corona pandemic, preparations for the harvest season, which is about to start, are underway.

The official season opening with Agriculture Minister Michaela Kaniber (CSU) is planned for April 12th in Lower Franconia this year.

However, the asparagus harvest begins earlier, probably in the second half of March.

For this purpose, several thousand harvest workers will come to Bavaria, mostly from Poland and Romania, as the asparagus producers' association in Franconia says.

These can at least so far enter the country unhindered.

Unlike last year, there are no worries in agriculture that helpers might be missing.

Asparagus prefers sandy soils, the largest Bavarian cultivation area is the region around the Upper Bavarian Schrobenhausen.

There are also many asparagus farmers in Lower Franconia between Kitzingen and Schweinfurt, in Middle Franconia, or in the Abensberg area in Lower Bavaria.

The area under cultivation has increased significantly over the past few decades.

The harvest traditionally ends on June 24th at the latest.
