Erfurt (dpa / th) - A good six months before the planned state election, MPs from Red-Red-Green are in favor of setting up a committee of inquiry into mafia investigations at short notice.

It should be about the background of the stopped investigation with the code name "Fido" against the Italian mafia in the Free State about twenty years ago.

It is advisable to check in parliament whether there was any political influence when the proceedings were terminated, said Katharina König-Preuss, member of the Left State Parliament, of the German Press Agency.

"A committee of inquiry is the possibility to examine that."

According to research by the MDR and the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”, an undercover agent was on duty at the time who is said to have succeeded in infiltrating the Italian groups.

Nevertheless, the investigations were then stopped against the will of the police officers involved in the operation.
