Hanover (dpa / lni) - The Left Party in Lower Saxony has confirmed its leadership duo at a party conference.

The delegates voted on Saturday with a clear majority for their chairmen Heidi Reichinnek from Osnabrück and Lars Leopold from the Hildesheim district association.

Reichinnek received around 76 percent of the vote, Leopold just under 83 percent.

There were no opposing candidates.

The state board includes other posts such as deputy chairperson and state treasurer, who were also elected.

"We are setting up a team that will guide us through the three elections," said the regional manager Christoph Podstawa with a view to the local and federal elections this year as well as the state elections next year.

The party wants to make the leap into the Lower Saxony state parliament.

Around 170 delegates came to a school in the state capital for the state party conference on Saturday.

The hygiene concept stipulated that all members were tested for the coronavirus at the beginning of the event and had to wear masks.

According to Podstawa, the first debates revolved around the social consequences of the pandemic.

The party calls for wealthy people to share in the costs of the crisis more fairly.

According to a recent survey, the Left in Lower Saxony sees itself on the upswing.

Chairman Leopold said: "We are pleased that we as a party are traded stable at 5 percent in surveys."

This is optimistic for the local elections on September 12th.

The Left wants to promote affordable housing, an expansion of bus and train traffic with lower prices and for investments in schools and daycare centers.
