For two weeks, the new detected cases of Covid-19 have tripled in Punjab, and doubled in Gujarat and Karnataka.

All of western and part of southern India are experiencing a resurgence of the virus, which could be described as the start of a second national wave.

Most parts of India were enjoying very low levels since the start of the year - and India was registering just 10,000 cases a day a month ago.

Today that figure is two and a half times higher.

It is still difficult to explain the reasons, but it is sure that the population has largely abandoned masks and physical distancing, which may have allowed infections.

The state of Maharashtra, where Bombay is located, imposed a lockdown on evenings and weekends in some districts, warning that it would crack down on hotels that did not respect hygiene measures.

Mumbai was one of the cities hardest hit by the first wave, and its hospitals were completely overwhelmed.

The authorities therefore want to do everything to avoid reliving this disaster.
