Emden / Osnabrück (dpa) - Starting in the summer, Volkswagen is relocating part of the assembly of the hatchback version of its Arteon sedan from the Emden plant to Osnabrück.

This will relieve the Emden location, which is currently also being converted for future production of electric models, said a VW spokeswoman on Friday.

It should start after the factory vacation in the summer.

Initially, the "Ostfriesen-Zeitung" and the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" reported on it.

Lower Saxony's Economics Minister Bernd Althusmann (CDU) also told the papers that the VW plant in Osnabrück was not working to capacity with the production of the T-Roc Cabrio model and should therefore also assemble the Arteon Shooting Brake.

According to this, bodies in Emden should first be assembled and painted and then brought to Osnabrück for final assembly by truck or train.

In total, an annual production of 10,000 vehicles is planned.

10.5 million euros would be invested in this.

"For the multi-brand location Osnabrück, the model results in a perspective until 2024 and beyond," Althusmann told the newspapers.

The Osnabrück plant has often suffered from underutilized capacities.

Meanwhile, the location in Emden will play a key role for VW in the coming years.

It is gradually being converted into a pure electric car plant.

From the first half of 2022 - as in Zwickau, Saxony - the electric compact SUV ID.4 will be built there, with further purely electric models to be added later.

The car company plans to invest around one billion euros in East Frisia for this purpose.

The first steps towards restructuring began in Emden last spring.
