Schwerin (dpa / mv) - An ecumenical service in Schwerin Cathedral was held on Friday to commemorate the dead and those who suffered from the corona pandemic that reached northern Germany a year ago.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania alone, more than 800 people have died in connection with corona disease.

"Behind every number there is a specific person, perhaps someone we know," said the Catholic Archbishop of Hamburg, Stefan Heße.

"There is always a name, a you."

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) lit a candle and said she was doing this for all children and young people in the state who miss their friends, their sport or their music, and especially for those children and young people who were at home be tight and loud.

"It is the light of hope and confidence."
