Offenbach (dpa) - After a stormy Thursday, the situation on the weather front in Germany should relax a little for the time being.

Although it should remain windy to stormy in large parts of the country on Friday, but not as strong as the day before, as a spokesman for the German Weather Service (DWD) said.

The storm "Klaus" hit the north and northwest of the country on Thursday, uprooting trees and causing disruptions in rail traffic.

The storm is expected to get stronger again on Saturday.

The storm damage on Thursday was not too great.

Especially in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, however, there were numerous weather-related missions for the police and fire brigade, often because of fallen trees or parts of buildings that had become loose.

Traffic on several railway lines was affected in the regions, two were closed.

In Bremen-Nord the power supply failed over a large area after a tree fell on a substation.

In downtown Essen, a passer-by was hit in the head by a falling roof tile.

In downtown Düsseldorf, a church tower cross loosened - probably also due to the storm.

According to the fire brigade, there was a risk of it falling.

Other parts of the country also felt the effects of "Klaus": There were power outages in two Thuringian districts, in Rhineland-Palatinate two cranes about 50 meters apart got tangled up.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, according to the DWD, there were wind speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, in Schleswig-Holstein up to 110 kilometers per hour were measured.

In exposed places such as the Kiel lighthouse (128 kilometers per hour), the Feldberg in the Black Forest (134 kilometers per hour) and the Brocken in the Harz Mountains (134 kilometers per hour), the wind was therefore even more violent.

The storm low reached its peak on Thursday.

A DWD spokesman said that on Friday night one was again in a weakening phase.

During the day the wind picked up again, but not as strong as on Thursday.

The weather experts expect a new storm low for Saturday.

Then it could go in the direction of gusts of wind, sometimes in the direction of gale-force gusts.
