Offenbach (dpa) - With storm "Klaus", Germany reached the first storm of the year.

This is the beginning of a changeable and very windy section of the weather, reported the German Weather Service (DWD).

"Klaus" can appear with hurricane-like gusts especially in the coastal area, as well as in the mountains.

In the afternoon, hurricane-like gusts can also be expected on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains.

A large-scale storm is not to be expected, said a DWD spokesman.

However, walks in the forest should be avoided.

Accompanied by the storm bottom, rain, changeable showers and individual sleet thunderstorms come.

While the north-west in particular has to expect stormy weather on Thursday, a new storm low is expected on Saturday, but it will be most pronounced in the middle and south of Germany.

According to the DWD, it is likely to move across the country with wind force 8 to 9.

The reason for the currently strong winds is a so-called westerly weather situation.

Low pressure areas move in rapid succession from the North Atlantic via Scandinavia to the east and, with their foothills, also influence Germany.

In addition to wind, they also bring rain and showers.

This makes it uncomfortable, especially on Sundays: at maximum daily temperatures of four to nine degrees, the precipitation turns into sleet and snow.
