Berlin (dpa) - The ZDF presenter Petra Gerster has, according to her own account, received a lot of angry messages since she started to gender on the news program “heute”.

"The majority of viewers refuse," said Gerster on Wednesday evening on the talk show "Maischberger".

"I get a lot of mail from the audience and have to answer a lot of letters every week."

A viewer even sent her books back because he “no longer wanted them to be on the shelf”.

Since October, the 66-year-old has been speaking about a break for a so-called gender asterisk in her moderation, so she speaks of "viewers" instead of "viewers".

As Gerster said, at the beginning she primarily motivated ZDF colleague Claus Kleber to use gender-sensitive language in her presentations.

When the 65-year-old started gendering as the first ZDF presenter, he took away her doubts as to whether it could even work.

"It's really a question of getting used to," said Gerster.

The use of the asterisk known as gender asterisk is intended to replace the generic masculine, i.e. the general masculine form.

The asterisk is used to include male, female and other genders and gender identities in personal designations.
