Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - Offspring among the monkeys in the Frankfurt Zoo: As the city of Frankfurt has just announced, a male urangutan was born there at the beginning of February.

For his mother Indah it is the first offspring.

The young animal was given the name Bukit, based on the Bukit-Tiga-Puluh protection program that the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) maintains on Sumatra.

"One day in advance, the whole orangutan group was gathered around the thirteen-year-old Indah and very interested in her, which indicated the impending birth," said zoo director Miguel Casares.

"Young Indah does her job very well and takes excellent care of her little one."

In the ape house Borgoriwald, all young animals of a year are given names with the same first letter according to the zoo tradition, Casares said.

This year it is the turn of the letter B.

Bukit is Indonesian and means "the hill".

The protection program, which served as the namesake for Bukit, started in Sumatra in 2000.

The FZS takes care of confiscated orangutans that were kept illegally as pets.

Over the past 20 years, more than 170 Sumatran orangutans have been resettled in the Bukit Tiga Puluh National Park.

However, zoo visitors cannot see the little Bukit for the time being, said Casares.

"The Borgori Forest must remain closed due to the risk of infection for great apes with the coronavirus, even if the zoo is now open again."
