Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Top candidates for the state election in Rhineland-Palatinate have unanimously spoken out in favor of strengthening the education system.

"The families are at their limit," said Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD) on Thursday evening in a SWR television debate.

To the accusation of her challenger Christian Baldauf (CDU) that the digitization of schools was progressing too slowly, she replied that Rhineland-Palatinate had “upgraded digitally in the summer”.

However, the WLAN connection of the schools is primarily the responsibility of the municipalities.

Like Dreyer, the Green top candidate Anne Spiegel emphasized that the opening steps in the corona pandemic at daycare centers and schools should have priority.

Regarding the equipment of the schools, she commented: "We have to make progress with digitization, that is completely clear."

FDP top candidate Daniela Schmitt described education as the “key to every path into the future”.

It should be clear to everyone that academic training does not take precedence over professional training: "A master must be worth as much as a master."
