Rudolstadt (dpa / th) - A first hurdle in the World Heritage application for the Thuringian palace landscape is to be cleared in October of this year.

The Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation announced on Wednesday that an application for inclusion in the list of proposals should be submitted to the German UNESCO Commission.

The foundation is preparing the application on behalf of the Thuringian State Chancellery and in coordination with the state curator.

Two employees of the foundation hired for this purpose are responsible for the application.

"In the first step we have to show the world heritage experts at the federal level that we can score points around the world with the Thuringian residences," said Doris Fischer, Foundation Director.

"First of all, that means a change of perspective: It's less about what we in Thuringia value and want to share with the world, but about what meets the strict UNESCO criteria."

In a second step, the monuments should then be selected for the application.

The selection will start in a few weeks and then be subjected to a comparative study.

"The result of this multi-stage review will form the core of the application," says Fischer.

According to the State Chancellery, Thuringia has a unique, dense landscape of castles.

The list of proposals is for future nominations for inclusion on Unesco's list of the world's cultural and natural heritage.

According to the Unesco website, the proposals, which are pending for nomination for the World Heritage List within the framework of the German quota, are submitted to the Unesco World Heritage Committee for a decision via the Secretariat of the Conference of Ministers of Education, the Foreign Office and the Unesco World Heritage Center in Paris.

Thuringia is currently applying for a place on the World Heritage List with evidence of the Jewish heritage of the state capital Erfurt.

There are also some world cultural heritage sites in the Free State: the Bauhaus sites in Weimar, the Classic Weimar and the Wartburg.

In 2011 the Hainich National Park was declared a World Heritage Site.
