In Sweden, there is a great shortage of detention and institutional places and a decision to increase the number by 300 places in the country has been made by the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.

It is in this context that the prison service in Norrbotten comes in.

- There are quick jerks based on the fact that the need for space is great right now.

The focus is on the places opening in the second quarter of 2022, says Jan Wallin.

More prison places on Porsön

For the county, this means that the prison on Porsön in Luleå will have an increase in the number of places with the help of modular houses.

- Instead of nine prison places for young people, there will be 48 closed places, Wallin says.

The prison also has more places, from 30 to around 45.

About 50 jobs for the county

In Haparanda, the number of prison places is increased by between 46-48.

A final decision on the expansion is expected to be made shortly.

In total, this is more than doubling the number of places, from the current 58 to around 140 places.

About 50 jobs are created.

- We will employ many in Norrbotten plus all the substitutes who are taken in in case of illness, says Jan Wallin.
