Météo France placed the Nord and Pas-de-Calais on an orange “wind” alert on Wednesday, on the eve of a “common winter” storm that could cause gusts of up to 100 to 110 km / h.

As this Atlantic disturbance approaches, driven by a depression currently located in the north-west of Ireland, the wind "begins to strengthen slowly, with first gusts from south to south-west close to 60 km / h" Wednesday afternoon, indicates Météo France.

Gusts of 90 km / h up to 110 km / h

The strengthening of the south-westerly wind should increase at the end of the night and in the morning of Thursday, "the strongest gusts then reaching 90 to 100 km / h, sometimes up to 100 to 110 km / h".

"These values concern most of the Nord and Pas-de-Calais, the south-eastern margin of these departments being however a little less exposed".

If the wind should then subside at the beginning of the afternoon, with "the passage of showers becoming more marked, locally strong gusts can nevertheless still occur in the evening", specifies Météo France.

In this type of alert, “significant damage” is possible, as well as disruption of air, rail and maritime transport and electricity and telephone distribution networks, depending on the service.
