Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The world-class tennis tournament for women in Stuttgart from April 19 to 25 will be played without a spectator.

The organizers announced this decision as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday more than a month before the start.

"After consulting the local authorities and the WTA players' association, we had to make this decision with a heavy heart, because the safety of everyone involved is our top priority," said tournament director Markus Günthardt.

In addition to the German number one Angelique Kerber, numerous top players have given their approval for the Porsche Grand Prix, including the Australian world number one Ashleigh Barty and Australian Open winner Naomi Osaka from Japan.

Tennis fans should be able to follow the matches live on the tournament website.

Live reporting is also planned for SWR, Eurosport and DAZN.

Daily summaries will also be available on the news channel n-tv, as the organizers announced.

In 2020, the WTA tournament in Stuttgart, like most of the tennis events planned in Germany, was canceled due to the coronavirus crisis.

In addition to Stuttgart, WTA tournaments are planned for this season in Cologne, Berlin and Bad Homburg.

For the men, Munich, Stuttgart, Halle and Hamburg are on the tournament calendar.
