Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania fears further rising costs for nursing home residents and has therefore launched a Federal Council proposal for a reform of nursing care insurance.

The capping of the pure care costs to 700 euros per resident announced by Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) hardly solves the problem, said Minister of Social Affairs Stefanie Drese (SPD) on Wednesday.

The Association of Substitute Funds criticized that a 700 euro cap would primarily benefit people in the western federal states.

According to current data from the association, 10 of the 16 federal states are currently above this threshold.

Drese explained that in addition to the own share of the pure care costs for the residents, there were other costs.

This included accommodation, meals, investment costs and the apprenticeship fee.

All in all, this leads to a heavy financial burden and not infrequently an overload of many people in need of care throughout Germany.

At the beginning of the year, according to the Association of Substitute Funds, the nationwide average for the home costs was 2068 euros per month and resident.

"Numerous performance improvements, welcome higher wages and the new generalist nursing training have led to significantly increasing costs within nursing," explained Minister Drese.

Long-term care insurance only covers part of these costs.

"As a result, the financial outlay for those in need of care has increased enormously."

The motion should be on the agenda of the Federal Council on March 26th.
