French President Emmanuel Macron receives the United States' special climate envoy John Kerry on Wednesday March 10, the Elysee said.

As part of his visit to Europe to strengthen cooperation in the fight against climate change, the former Secretary of State also had lunch with the French Minister of the Economy, Bruno Lemaire.

"The discussion will focus on the next stages of international coordination in climate matters, and will be an opportunity for the French president to share with his interlocutor his vision of effective climate multilateralism," adds the French presidency.

On Tuesday, John Kerry had already met the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, a first face-to-face meeting with EU representatives since the change of government in Washington.

After this meeting, the US climate envoy pleaded in Brussels for "enhanced" cooperation between his country and the EU in the fight against climate change, stressing that it was "the moment" to act.

He is also due to travel to London to meet with UK government officials.

The latter is organizing the UN climate conference (COP26) scheduled for Glasgow in November.

International summit in Washington before COP26 in Glasgow

The fight against climate change was prioritized by President Joe Biden, who brought the United States back to the Paris agreement, almost four years after Donald Trump announced his withdrawal from his country .

Washington is also planning to organize an international climate summit on April 22, before the UN climate conference scheduled for November in Glasgow (Scotland) to monitor the Paris Agreement.

The Paris Agreement aims to limit warming below 2 ° C, and 1.5 ° C if possible, from levels prior to the industrial revolution.

The 27 EU countries agreed in December to raise their greenhouse gas reduction target, targeting a net reduction in emissions of "at least 55%" by 2030 compared to at the 1990 level, against -40% previously, in order to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050.
