Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In the case of business trips, state employees in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are to use trains and buses more often in the future, but in the best case scenario they should switch to the data highway and thus completely dispense with journeys for meetings.

With so far more than 100,000 business trips a year, every trip not taken is good for climate protection, said Finance Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) on Wednesday in the state parliament in Schwerin.

The country must lead by example on this issue.

Meyer submitted the draft of a new state travel expenses law to parliament for consultation and resolution.

Among other things, it aims to reduce travel activities.

"A business trip should only be carried out if a more cost-effective way of doing business, for example by telephone or video conference, is not possible," says the reason for the change in the law.

Domestic air travel should in principle no longer be approved in the future.

In order to encourage switching to public transport, the draft law no longer has to prove that buses and trains are actually the cheapest means of travel.

So far, due to the legal requirements, state employees often had to use the company car as the most economical means of transport, it said.

As an incentive for climate-friendly mobility, a surcharge of three cents per kilometer is to be granted for trips with a private electric car.

The formation of car pools is also subsidized more than before.

The compensation payments for private cars used for business purposes are increased by five cents per kilometer.
