Today, Wednesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani talked about his government's strategy in dealing with Washington and the rest of the nuclear file, and at the same time he addressed Tehran's vision of how to stop the conflict in Yemen.

Rouhani said that conditions have become appropriate for all parties to return to implement the nuclear deal, and called on the United States to take the first step and initiate the lifting of sanctions and abide by its commitments "because it is the first country to violate the agreement."

He stressed that his country is pursuing a step-for-step policy, explaining that the lifting of all sanctions will be met by Tehran to backtrack on all measures to reduce its nuclear commitments.

In the event that part of the sanctions are lifted, Rouhani said that Iran will only back down on a part of the measures it has taken recently.

The Iranian president said, "The choice is up to the American administration if it wants to choose the right path. This will be in the interest of everyone and will lead to improving conditions regionally and internationally."

He pointed out that the United States claims its desire to return to the nuclear agreement, "but it has not taken any step in this regard."

He added, "Washington has not negotiated its withdrawal from the nuclear agreement, and its return to it does not need negotiations."

Rouhani had called on European countries to avoid "the language of threat or pressure" in any negotiations with the "Islamic Republic", during his meeting with Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney on Sunday, in light of diplomatic efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal.

The United States unilaterally withdrew from the accord in 2018 under former President Donald Trump, and re-imposed harsh economic sanctions on Tehran.

The administration of the new president, Joe Biden, has expressed its intention to return to the agreement, but it has stipulated that Iran resumes full implementation of its nuclear obligations, which it began to backtrack on as of 2019. On the other hand, Iran stresses the priority of lifting sanctions.

Today, a State Department official said that President Biden would not take unilateral steps regarding the Iranian nuclear file.

He added that the Iranian elections do not affect the timetable for talks on the nuclear file.

Zone crises

On the crises of the Middle East region, Rouhani said that his country is ready to find a solution to the region's problems within the framework of regional cooperation and strengthening the role of the United Nations.

Rouhani stressed that the conflict in Yemen cannot be resolved militarily.

He stressed his country's readiness to support any effort by the United Nations to find a solution to this crisis.

Since 2015, Yemen has been witnessing a war between the Houthi group - accused of receiving support from Tehran - and government forces backed by the Saudi-Emirati coalition.

The war has claimed the lives of more than 233,000 Yemenis, and 80% of the population (about 30 million people) has become dependent on support and aid, in the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, according to the United Nations.

Also today, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan said that Iran continues to supply the Houthis in Yemen with ballistic missiles and drones.

The Houthi group has recently intensified its targeting of Saudi cities with drones, and has pledged to continue the escalation until the end of what it calls the Riyadh-led aggression against Yemen.
