Due to the sharp decline in fertility ... Finland is opening its doors to more immigrants

On Wednesday, the Finnish government urged the relevant authorities in the country to increase the flow of migrants from 16,000 currently to 25,000 annually by 2030.

"A potential goal could be to increase net immigrants to 25,000 by 2030," the government’s report on demographic development said.

"Without immigrants, Finland's population will decrease. A sharp decline in childbearing will weaken the government's fiscal base and increase social inequality," the report said.

Finland's birth rate, which has a population of 5.5 million, in 2010 fell by a quarter, and the percentage of elderly people was one of the highest in the world.

The report's authors note that during this period, the country's fertility rate fell, on average, to less than 1.4 children per woman.
