Dresden (dpa / sn) - Women earned less than men in Saxony last year.

The income gap, the so-called gender pay gap, was seven percent in 2020, according to figures from the Federal Statistical Office on Tuesday.

The income gap thus remained at the same level as in 2019. However, the Free State is better off than the national average: nationwide, the difference in earnings between women and men was 18 percent.

Even seven percent could not be satisfied, emphasized Minister of Gender Equality Katja Meier (Greens).

"Because the goal must be to close this wage gap completely."

Since 2008, the gap has been denounced on the International Day of Action for Equal Pay for Women and Men, the Equal Pay Day.

The date describes the day of the year until which women would have to work arithmetically for free if the gap was converted into working hours.

This year, Equal Pay Day falls on March 10th.

The Corona crisis in particular shows that the discussion about fair wages must be continued, said Minister Meier.

“It is women who keep the country going in so-called typical female professions - be it in care for the elderly and the sick, child care or in retail.

They are systemically relevant and yet often underpaid. "
