Last year, the district court sentenced the men to several years in prison for a serious environmental crime.

Today, the Court of Appeal ruled that two of the men were once again sentenced for a serious environmental crime to three and two and a half years in prison, respectively.

The Court of Appeal also upholds the district court's decision on a business ban for these two men.

Conditional sentence for two

The other two men are sentenced for environmental crimes, but not to prison.

The two men are sentenced to a suspended sentence and the Court of Appeal annuls the district court's decision on a business ban.

The Court of Appeal finds, just like the district court, that the men who handled around 1,900 tonnes of black pulp were transported from Karlskoga to various places in Örebro, Kumla and Eskilstuna where the waste was stored outdoors without weather protection and also buried.

Contaminated with heavy metals

According to the investigation that has been done, the battery mass has been handled so that the leachate from the waste has been corrosive and has been extremely polluted by heavy metals.

There has also been a risk that that water would spread and that the substances could affect the health of humans, animals and plants in the long and short term.
