On March 9, local time, Lee Lo-Yon, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea’s ruling party, resigned to prepare for the presidential election next year.

He announced the news at the retiring press conference held that afternoon.

According to a recent public opinion survey in South Korea, Lee Nak-yeon’s approval rating is lower than that of Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung and Yoon Seok-yue, who announced his resignation as the chief prosecutor last week.

In this regard, Li Luoyuan said at the press conference, "This is due to my shortcomings and political difficulties", and said that "should be humbly accepted."

Li Luoyuan was elected as the leader of the Common Democratic Party on August 29 last year. Generally speaking, the first term of the party is two years; however, the Democratic Party Constitution stipulates that if the party leader or the highest committee member participates in the presidential election, he must resign one year before the election.

However, Li Luoyuan will continue to serve as the permanent chairman of the Democratic Party’s election management countermeasures committee and the chairman of the Garde Island Special Committee.
