Schwerin (dpa / mv) - With the imminent completion of the corona vaccinations in the old people's and care facilities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the visiting rules are also to be relaxed again.

The aim is to enable residents to have more social contacts again, said Minister of Social Affairs Stefanie Drese (SPD) in Schwerin on Tuesday.

It is important to carefully weigh up between protective measures and easing steps.

The expert committee for care and social affairs set up by her has drawn up proposals for possible opening steps, which are now being discussed.

Drese expressed the wish for nationwide regulations.

According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, the first vaccinations have been completed in 99 percent of the approximately 250 homes across the country, and in 95 percent all those who want to be vaccinated have already received the second injection.

The willingness to vaccinate was particularly high among the residents of the home, and slightly lower among the employees, it said.

"The protection intended with the vaccination can already be seen from the significantly decreasing number of cases in old people's and nursing homes in our country," said Drese.

Corona infections with around 350 people were recently registered in 25 facilities.

A few weeks ago the number of positive cases was 1500.

With the swift vaccinations in the inpatient care facilities, the basis was laid for a gradual return to a familiar everyday life and togetherness, said Drese.

However, a few new corona infections also occurred in facilities after a second vaccination.

This shows that compliance with protective and hygiene measures, such as wearing masks and having employees tested, are still necessary to protect the elderly.
