Bonn (dpa) - After the best financial year in its company's history, Deutsche Post DHL is assuming that parcel volumes will continue to rise this year.

In 2020, the Bonn-based group transported around 1.6 billion shipments that were sent and received within Germany.

That was 15.3 percent more than in the previous year, as Deutsche Post DHL announced on Tuesday in Bonn.

In the future, the growth will "normalize", but it will continue to rise.

In 2019, the volume increase was much lower.

The reason for the accelerated growth is the corona pandemic - people are ordering more goods on the Internet, also because of the restrictions in stationary retail.

The company with 570,000 employees worldwide presented correspondingly good annual figures.

While sales climbed 5.5 percent to 66.8 billion euros, net profit soared by 13.6 percent to 3 billion euros.

The fourth quarter, in which the Christmas business is important for the industry, was particularly good.

The group is optimistic about the future.

In the current year, the operating result (EBIT), which in 2020 was 4.8 billion euros, is expected to increase to more than 5.6 billion.

For the year 2023, the Bonn-based company will then have an EBIT of 6.0 billion on the list.

The management wants the shareholders to participate in the good business development.

On Monday, the group announced that it wanted to buy back shares worth up to one billion euros and that it would increase the dividend sharply this year.
