Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Rhineland-Palatinate model project for a corona vaccination of bedridden and immobile elderly people is being expanded.

From this Thursday (March 11th) onwards, all resident doctors in Rhineland-Palatinate will be able to register and vaccinate their patients at home from March 22nd, Health Minister Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler (SPD) announced on Tuesday in Mainz.

This then applies to bedridden and immobile people over the age of 70.

By the end of April, up to 30,000 people should be able to get their first injections from their family doctors at home.

The nationwide first pilot project has started successfully, 44 bedridden and immobile patients over 80 years have been vaccinated at home so far.

"The pilot doctors report that everything went smoothly," said the minister.

Patients and relatives are very happy.

Many bedridden people have already reported to their family doctors about a vaccination, others could do so now.

It could also be that the doctors approach the patient on their own initiative, because they always have to vaccinate six people at once so that no dose is lost.

The organization is incumbent on the practices, added state vaccination coordinator Alexander Wilhelm (SPD).

The practices could, for example, cooperate or inject the remaining vaccine doses into other people in the corresponding priority group.
