Berlin (dpa) - ARD and ZDF can now broadcast games of the European Football Championship 2024 in Germany.

Around a year and a half after the success in rights poker, Telekom has agreed with the two broadcasters on a sub-license for the home European championships, according to information from the German press agency.

The extensive contract offers the public TV providers the opportunity to show the majority of the games.

This also includes the games of the German team.

In October 2019, Telekom surprisingly secured all of the media rights for the European Championship in Germany from the European Football Union (UEFA) and prevailed against ARD and ZDF, among others, in the tender.

The company had then declared that it wanted to resell part of the rights.

"We do not want to hide the EM and want to broadcast more than the prescribed games freely," said Telekom manager Henning Stiegenroth in an interview with the German press agency last year.

"We want to work with partners."

But some things remain “exclusive” at Telekom.

The Interstate Broadcasting Treaty stipulates that the German team's European Championship matches, the opening game, the semi-finals and the final must be freely receivable.

This is guaranteed with classic TV providers such as ARD, ZDF, RTL and Sat.1, but would theoretically also be possible with an Internet offer.

For several years, Telekom has been one of the established sports providers with extensive rights packages.

It shows basketball, ice hockey and third-league football, among other things, on the MagentaTV platform.
