Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, according to the German Life-Saving Society (DLRG), fewer people drowned in swimming accidents last year than in the year before.

According to figures published on Tuesday, 21 people drowned - 6 fewer than in 2019. 4 victims were women and 17 men.

Eleven people drowned in the Baltic Sea and ten in inland waters.

Across Germany, fatal swimming accidents in inland waters account for by far the largest proportion.

«Rivers and lakes are still the greatest sources of danger.

Only comparatively few bodies of water are guarded by lifeguards ”, DLRG President Achim Haag is quoted in a message.

At least 378 people drowned nationwide, nine percent less than in the previous year.

Many monthly numbers are down compared to the previous year, but there was a noticeably strong increase in August - from 45 in 2019 to 117. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also recorded the highest value with six drowned people in August.

"Especially the hot summer weather in August invited people to spontaneous excursions to the inland waters and the beaches on the North and Baltic Seas," said Haag.

Because many people stayed in Germany because of the corona pandemic, the rush was sometimes very large.

79 and thus the most fatal swimming accidents were registered for Bavaria.
