Many people remember the heat wave in the summer of 2018. According to SMHI's climate scenarios, the heat wave 2018 may be a warning about how the climate of the future may be.

- But it depends on what we do with the emissions, says meteorologist Elin Sjökvist.

She has been involved in producing climate analyzes for Sweden's counties and the report "Summer 2018 - a glimpse of the future?"

where the authors state that "The longest heat wave of the year (2018) is very similar to the calculated average value according to RCP8.5 (high emissions) at the end of the century for the Baltic coast."

Customize housing

However, the summer of 2018 was drier than the climate models show.

To reduce the risk of health risks from heat waves - and energy-intensive cooling devices in homes - in the future, one should already now look at how cities and homes can be adapted to build in coolness, according to several experts that SVT spoke to.

A review by SVT Nyheter Småland and the newspaper Hem och hyra shows that few municipal housing companies make such adjustments today.
