The police caught an eleven-year-old car thief in Gifhorn in Lower Saxony.
On Sunday lunchtime, a driver parked his car on the parking lane to pick up his food from a snack bar, the police said on Monday.
The MPV was unlocked, the 31-year-old may have left the ignition key in or lost it when getting out.
Without further ado, the 11-year-old took the opportunity, got in with his 13-year-old friend and drove off.
The owner saw this out of the corner of his eye and followed them with another car.
At the same time he alerted the police.
A few minutes later there was an accident - the eleven-year-old reversed the stolen car against another car at a traffic light.
Nobody was injured, the damage to the cars was 12,000 euros.
The children were examined by a doctor - and finally handed over to their legal guardians.
